How to Install New Fonts

Why is this shy marsh bird, the Sora, featured on a post about fonts? Read on.

The Sora, a small waterbird, ranges from the Caribbean and Central America to Canada.

How to Install New Fonts

If your organization has provided specific fonts for branding, here’s how to install them on your system.

If you are not with Cru, these instructions will work for you, but not for the specific fonts. Any links about branding will only work for Cru staff.

Cru’s New Branding

I’m impressed with Cru’s Branding Refresh announced yesterday. I’ve made some changes already.

The FAQs: Cru Brand Refresh has links for the font downloads, Sora, Inter, and Noto.

Download the Fonts

Find the two fonts, Sora and Inter, in Cru’s Brand Identity Guidelines.

Cru also has Noto for international typography.

Install the Fonts to Your Operating System

Apple

For your Mac, search for “how to add licensed fonts on macOS.” You’ll see the specific steps.

These steps should be similar to what I did for adding fonts to my Windows operating system.

Windows

If you have a PC like me:

  • Go to Windows Explorer. Open the Sora folder to show the light, bold, and other variations.
  • Highlight all versions of Sora.
    • Right-click to highlight and choose “Extract all” to a folder of your choice. (I have a “Cru” folder.)
    • Right-click to highlight and click “Install.”
  • Do the same for Inter’s eight variations.

Both fonts and their variations should be in your operating system now.

If you have the files for Cru’s old fonts, consider putting them in an archive folder.

Where Can You Use the Fonts?

A good habit for tech changes is to test afterward.

Microsoft

I’m not using Microsoft 365, so I don’t know what is involved with the new fonts.

I did not see the fonts in Excel.

I found the fonts for Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. However, I only saw seven variations of Sora and three of Inter.

Google

I did not see the fonts in Gmail. This would make it hard to have a Cru-branded signature through Google.

Google Docs, Sites, and Slides had all eight variations.

Sheets had one version each for Inter and Sora.

Other

If you have Canva Pro with Cru, all eight fonts for Inter and Soto are available, along with a long list of fonts for Noto.

Add a Little Color

I played around with the fonts and colors to create a new email signature in Outlook. (You’ll find Cru’s colors in the Branding Guidelines.)

I don’t know if the Branding Team will offer a signature template.

Conclusions

  • Stay informed about Cru’s branding guidelines by following the Workplace group, Cru Brand Identity.
  • I googled and found troubleshooting steps for fonts that aren’t displaying. I’ll look into this and post it shortly.
    • If you’re on a Mac, please let me know if you see all the variations of these fonts in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

NOTES:

  • See the Workplace announcement about Cru’s refreshed branding
  • I’m a birder, so I’m using photos of the small marsh bird, the Sora, for today’s post.
  • The Sora images are available on Wikimedia. The photos were taken by Mike Baird and Elaine R Wilson.
